On Friday June 13, 2025 at 10:00am, the Durham Elder Abuse Network (D.E.A.N.) will be recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a flag raising and a proclamation ceremony at Durham Regional Headquarters, 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby. This ceremony will include the presentation of the “Tammy Rankin Legacy Award”. Tammy Rankin was the Senior Safety Advisor for the Municipality of Durham, a founding member of D.E.A.N. and developed a partnership with the Durham Regional Police Senior Support Coordinator position. Tammy worked tirelessly to advocate for and support the older adult population in our community. She was known for going beyond the scope of her position and putting “her seniors first”.

The “Tammy Rankin Legacy Award” is an opportunity to highlight an inspiring individual or organization who are making a difference in the lives of older adults and vulnerable individuals in Durham Region. This can be through their everyday job, a volunteer position, or as a member of the community.

“If you work with someone, know a caregiver, volunteer, community member or agency that goes the extra mile to serve older adults in our community, we want to hear about it. No story is too big or too small. D.E.A.N. wants to recognize those who continue to advocate and serve older adults the way Tammy did,” stated Jennifer Josephson – Chairperson of D.E.A.N.

The Durham Elder Abuse Network is committed to the advocacy and education within our community to keep older adults safe. For a nomination form, please email jjosephson@brockchc.ca or Morgan.Denby@durham.ca.
